Modern Thai tapas spread at Khaosan Bar, George Town Penang

George Town, Penang · Modern Thai Tapas

Bangkok street food, plated for the bar on Campbell Street.

Modern Thai tapas and clarified cocktails from two MasterChef Thailand finalists, served in a heritage shophouse. Six till late, Tuesday through Sunday.

Two MasterChef Thailand chefs. One heritage shophouse.

Khaosan was born from a chance meeting in early 2023. Our Penang co-owner had just weathered the pandemic as a local restaurateur and was looking for the next chapter. He met two finalists from MasterChef Thailand Season 3 — Chef Pond and Chef Toei — the country's most-watched culinary competition and a Nataraja Award winner. The three became co-owners.

Together they took over a heritage shophouse on Lebuh Campbell — dark wood, industrial cement, a six-seat bar lined with top-shelf spirits — and put the first modern Thai tapas bar in George Town on the map. Pull up a stool, order more than you think you need.

Chef Pond & Chef Toei

Two MasterChef Thailand Season 3 finalists who traded the TV kitchen for a heritage shophouse on Lebuh Campbell. Every plate carries a decade of competition-honed instinct.

Chef Pond — MasterChef Thailand Season 3 finalist
MasterChef Thailand · Season 3 Finalist

Chef Pond

Pond reached the final rounds of MasterChef Thailand Season 3. At Khaosan he runs the tapas pass, translating Bangkok street snacks into composed small plates — betel leaf, southern chilli paste, smoked aubergine, ferments. Short ingredient lists, long flavours.

Signature — Kuagling Taco · minced pork, southern Thai chilli paste, petai bean.
Chef Toei — MasterChef Thailand Season 3 finalist
MasterChef Thailand · Season 3 Finalist

Chef Toei

Toei focuses on cold prep, raw bar, and the playful crossovers that gave the bar its name — Thai flavours framed as tapas. Her plating sets the visual tone of the menu: bright herbs, glossy sauces, controlled portions that reward ordering one more round.

Signature — Khao Yum · Thai "bibimbap," river prawn, prawn-head butter, tobiko.
